5 Tips to protect your hair this summer

Updated: Jun 18, 2021

During the summer months, we usually make sure to cover ourselves in sunscreen, but there is one part of our body which we are forgetting – our hair. Although hair doesn’t burn in the same way as skin does, it still gets damaged by the sun. And the sun is not all we need to look out for. Chlorine contained in swimming pools and salt contained in the sea can be as damaging.

But don’t fear! We have prepared a list of preventive tips to help you protect your hair before the damage is done!

1. Keep your hair above water

The easiest way to avoid chlorine and salt build-up is not to put your hair in the pool or sea water. However, we understand you might not be able to resist the odd full-body jump (who can blame you). If you do, it is recommended to first wet your hair with fresh water. Your hair can only absorb so much liquid and by wetting it with fresh water first, you are reducing the amount of chlorine and salt water that will enter your hair strain. After your dip, make sure to rinse your hair with fresh water too, to remove any build up.

2. · Reduce hair wash frequency

The sun, chlorine and sea salt will have a drying effect on your scalp. Therefore, make sure to space out the frequency at which you wash your hair. If you feel the need to wash your hair because of sweat and humidity, we recommend rinsing your hair with cold or lukewarm water and applying a conditioner to the tips for a refresh without the need to use shampoo.

3. · Wear a hat/headscarf

The easiest way to avoid sun damage is, of course, to avoid it reaching your hair. Wearing a protective hat or a headscarf/band will ensure that the sun’s UV rays don’t land on your hair.

4. Use hydrating hair care products

Switch your usual hair care products for seriously nourishing & moisturising formulas and finish your routine with a pea sized amount of hair oil through the ends to lock the moisture in. It is also recommended to mask regularly throughout and after the summer season to ensure the moisture barrier of your hair never gets fully depleted.

5. Towel gently

When drying your hair with a towel, make sure to be extremely gentle and NEVER rub your hair against each other when drying. Instead, pad dry or air dry your hair.

With these easy tips, you're ready for the summer! 🌞
